Rob and I had visited the Barrel Thief, which is a wine shop in the West End of Richmond. It's a very impressive place with lots of wines, and opportunity to taste any (or all) of the wines they are currently serving, and a wonderful menu of snack-type foods to go with your wine of choice. Recently, I tried a Spanish wine that was a blend, and its main grape was Syrah. Hence my curiosity to explore this grape more.
We picked up this bottle of 6th Sense Syrah at a local Kroger grocery store. The bottle was around $17 - a little more than I like to pay. It was normally priced over $20, so I felt it might be a good deal.
I uncork it, let it breath just a bit (AN ASIDE: I have no idea why you're supposed to do this. I can't taste any difference if it's "breathed" or simply "consumed" as soon as I can wrestle the cork out of the bottle. But that's just an aside). I pour a glass and do enjoy the aroma ... kinda smokey, I think, and I think it's going to be a heavier-bodied wine.
I take a sip.
Boy, was that unexpected.
I just didn't care for it at first. Maybe it was the smokey TASTE that I didn't care for. It was kinda sharp tasting with a bit of a bite. Rob took a sip and said he thought it was really good. I didn't share that sentiment.
For those who were wondering, no, it didn't go to waste. We did finish drinking the bottle. I'm interesting in trying another Syrah, but I may not pick up this particular one again.

I'm funny. I love leathery, smoky tobacco...ee(?) wines, but I'm not to big on syrah/shiraz. I probably would agree with your assesment of that wine.
I also don't get the breathing thing. But then, no bottle or glass of wine set in front of me has ever had much opportunity to breathe.
Perhaps you should try a syrah/shiraz blend? Yalumba Shiraz/Viognier is one of my favorites, containing a fruit forward full body and a light, sweet finish. I find it goes well with many foods and cheeses or just sipping with friends.
